Apple wants you to purchase or rent movies through its iTunes store, but if you’ve already bought the recently hot movies like “Fast Five”, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow” on DVDs, seems like you should rip/copy the movie DVDs to iTunes and not to buy them again from iTunes store. In this how-to guide, you’ll find out exactly how to import DVD movies to iTunes on Mac (Snow Leopard, Lion included), and it will be much easier than you may have imagined.
How to rip and convert DVD to iTunes acceptable video files on Mac OS X
Step1. You need to download a Mac DVD to iTunes ripping/converting program, because iTunes doesn’t accept the Video_TS.vob files. I highly recommend the iSkysoft DVD Ripper for Mac which is available to rip any DVD (commercial DVDs included), and convert the DVD rips into iTunes playable video format like .MP4, .MOV .M4V etc.
Step2. Insert a DVD to your iMac or Macbook DVD drive. Open up the iSkysoft program and select “File” -> “Load DVD” or “Load DVD files” to load the titles/chapters from DVD-Rom to this program. After loading, you can choose to rip the whole DVD or certain title/chapter of the movie. You can even convert the segment of the movie by trimming the DVD movie.
Step3. Locate the "Output" menu. From here, select “General Video Format” and choose “MP4” as your output format. You can also “MOV” or “M4V” supported by iTunes. Furthermore, if your ultimate aim is to play the DVD movie on your iPad, iPod, iPhone etc., you can directly choose the output format from the conversion profiles with optimized parameters available for iPad, iPod, iPhone or other multimedia devices.
Step4. Hit the “Convert” button to begin the conversion. This DVD to iTunes Mac Ripper will typically take about 80 - 100 minutes to convert a 120-minute DVD into iTunes (MP4) format. After converting, launch iTunes and drag & drop the new MP4 file into iTunes movie folder. That’s it.
